Counselling

Why Counselling?

Many people seek help through Counselling because they feel distressed and burdened by life's events. For some, painful memories of the past and events in the present together with worries for the future combined overwhlem their ability to cope. Although friends can be supportive, there may be occasions when it is difficult to share very personal problems with them for fear of being rejected or ridiculed. To be able to share your worries with a trained and skilled Counsellor can bring enormous relief.

What is Counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity to share your troubles, thoughts and feelings with someone who is trained to listen objectively and to reflect upon what is being said. The Counsellor acts as a sounding board to encourage you, the client, to explore various aspects of your life and feelings concerning them. Sessions are private and confidential allowing you the client to talk, discuss freely and openly in a way rarely possible with friends and family without feeling judged. Bottled up feelings such as anger, grief, anxiety, shame, guilt, embarassment can become very intense. An opportunity to express them and talk openly about them in a secure and safe place can help dissolve them and reduce the pain and hurt associated, thus making these negative feelings easier to understand and accept.

Your concerns might be to do with any aspect of your life such as:

Counselling can help you understand more about yourself, your concerns, what makes you tick, so that you can live in a more satisfying and resourceful way.

How Long Will It Take?

That depends on you, the Counsellor and your problems. While deep-rooted ones will need longer (one/two hours a week for several months), short-term counselling for a specific problem may take only a few weekly sessions.
